The Legendary of Yangmei

Yangmei is a Chinese native fruit with bright colour, good sugar-acid balance and palatable taste. According to the archaeological findings, wild Yangmei can be dated back to 5,000 B.C.. It is grown in the subtropical region of southeast China, primarily in Zhejiang Province, where the cultivation of Yangmei can be dated back to Han Dynasty. With cultivar resources and cultivation experience, all elite varieties nowadays - Dongkui, Chufa, Dingao and Wandao, are exclusively coming from Zhejiang Province.
As a unique fruit from the southern regions to Yangtze River, adapting Yangmei to medication was firstly seen in Shi Liao Ben Cao, a herbal medicine book written by Meng Xian in Tang Dynasty. According to the Compendium of Materia Medica, a herbal pharmacological masterpiece written by Li Shi Zhen, the greatest herbal pharmacologist in 16th century, Yangmei is able to "eliminate sputum, stop vomiting, helpful to digestion and alcoholic drinking . quench thirst, conciliate the five internal organs, cleanse stomach and intestines, remove the muddleheaded . and be efficacious to cure diarrhea". Su Dongpo, the master poet in Song Dynasty praised that Yangmei in Zhejiang Province overwhelms either lychee in Canton or grape in Sinkiang.
